2021 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT PROFILE: Daviyon Nixon
We are going to take a look at Daviyon Nixon, defensive tackle out of the University of Iowa. Nixon is a very intriguing prospect. It was evident that he was going to get draft at some point regardless. However, due to his stellar play, Nixon has projected himself to a higher draft stock. At 6’3” 305 lbs, it’s clear to see that Nixon looks the part of an NFL DT.
Pros:
As mentioned, Nixon certainly has the size to make NFL coaches and GM’s very interested. However, with that size comes a lot of athleticism for the position. Nixon isn’t a “one trick pony.” That said, Nixon plays the run and pass very effectively. Overall, Nixon is a very disruptive player from the middle. He can stuff the run, while also push the pocket in the passing game. Nixon has recorded double digit TFL and five sacks, as well as a 71-yard INT return for a TD against Penn St. Nixon is great at bull rushing; however, he has also showed various other moves in his repertoire. Lastly, one of the most impressive parts of Nixon’s game is his run-fits. Nixon is great against the run, not because he makes the tackle each and every time. Rather, because he helps make the play by taking up blockers, penetrating the offensive line, thus, allowing LB’s to swarm and make the tackle.
Cons:
While Nixon has played really good football this last season, this (2020) season was his first year as a full-time starter. Previously, Nixon was rotated in with Cedrick Lattimore playing DT. That being said, Nixon could still be considered “raw.” Not always a “con” however, some people might view Nixon as a “one-year wonder.”
Bottom Line:
To conclude, Nixon’s stock has gone upward big time over the last few weeks of the college football season. There is still a long way to go before the draft. However, should he declare, it’s clear that Nixon is one of, if not THE highest ranked interior defensive lineman in the 2021 NFL Draft. I’d expect him to go anywhere from mid-first round to early-second round. I would compare Daviyon Nixon to Kevin Williams.
