Samuel Cosmi is a 6’7 209 lb OT from the University of Texas. He has a lot of experience, starting 34 games at both right and left tackle, (14 at RT and 21 at LT). Cosmi was a little raw heading into the 2020 season but showed improvement in a lot of areas that he needed to show improvement in. Without delay, let’s get into the scouting report!

Strengths: The first thing to note about Cosmi is his size. Standing at 6’7 309 lbs, he has a prototypical NFL offensive tackle frame, with room to add more weight. This leads to great length in his arms, giving him a good ability to protect his body from defensive linemen. Cosmi displays good athleticism, some of which isn’t completely tapped into, and he does well against speed rushers as he can easily stay in front of and mirror the pass rushers on the outside. Cosmi has a good kick step, and when needed, he can ride pass rushers right out of the play, using their momentum against them. His athletic profile also allows him to pull and get out in front of running backs on the edge, which is a huge positive. He also displays a solid base with a strong lower half with a good ability to anchor his feet into the ground against more power rushers in the passing game. Cosmi also has displayed a good ability to recover if he initially is beat off the line, never giving up on a block. The most promising trait I saw from Cosmi was his improvement from 2019 to 2020. In 2019 he showed struggles with leaning into defensive linemen, often on his toes, forcing him to be off balance. In 2020 that was much improved, as he proved to be much more balanced in both the run and the pass game, driving more through his heels and sitting down a little more with better knee bend.

Weaknesses: Although Cosmi did improve his knee bend, due to his height, he still needs to work his pad level down a little bit lower in order to be at the same height and lower than defensive linemen (lower man always wins). Although Cosmi has a strong base, I would like to see him improve his upper body strength, as he can get stood up against stronger defensive linemen and can give up his chest when that happens. Cosmi is still raw, and he needs to work on his hand technique and placement, as he sometimes has them too wide, or struggles to latch onto defensive linemen, and his technique overall is a little inconsistent.

Bottom Line: Cosmi is an intriguing prospect because he has a lot of potential due to his size, frame, and athletic ability. He still has some refinement and learning to do, and will probably go through some growing pains, but he has a great start. Size and athleticism are two things that can’t be taught, and he has both, and he just needs some coaching to fix his problems. Cosmi is a player who I think has Pro Bowl potential if he can fix all of his issues, but could struggle if he doesn’t. His improvement of his balance and knee bend from 2019 to 2020 gives me confidence that he will be able to continue to improve and refine his skills. I believe he will be a solid starter, probably starting at RT and moving over to LT in year 2 or 3.
