Christian Watson Draft Profile

In a loaded and talented 2022 wide receiver class, Christian Watson stands out from North Dakota State University in the FCS. Watson’s 6’5 207 pound frame already gives defensive backs a challenge. However, it’s Christian Watson’s abilities with the ball in his hands and his versatility in a pro-style offense that catches the league’s attention. NDSU utilized  Christian Watson’s athleticism the same way how the 49ers use Deebo Samuel’s ability to play in multiple positions on offense.

Strengths: Christian Watson is a 6’5 207 pound deep threat by possessing 4.44 speed, great hand-eye coordination by tracking the ball, catching passes with his hands away from his body, and securing the catch. Christian Watson is a very physical runner, often lowering his shoulder for extra yards and stiff-arming defensive players to break tackles. He’s versatile on offense by playing the X, Z, slot, and running back positions in certain packages.

Weaknesses: Ideal weight for someone who showcases consistent physical play and usage in the backfield, but doesn’t have the overall power to impose his will as a blocker, especially when lined up in the backfield. Lacks a variety of moves to get separation. Sometimes disappears in games when not targeted in high volume; I want to see more effort into making himself open on broken plays.

Scheme Fit/Best Utilized: Christian Watson has a variety of abilities as a pure athlete and would excel in a  offense that can use him as a weapon all over the offense; similar to Deebo Samuel, Curtis Samuel, & Cordale Patterson. Christian Watson can be solely used as a wide receiver; but would be a mis-match by being lined up in he X,Z, and slot position that he is accustomed to playing in college.
