Kosta’s Bold Take: There is a very good chance that Kellen Mond and Davis Mills both get drafted before Kyle Trask.

If anyone told you this in the fall (when Trask was a Heisman candidate, Mond was a name without much buzz, and Mills was an unknown to casual fans), it would sound crazy. I think the hype around Kyle Trask’s success with Florida this season is carrying over to this draft process within the media and the general public, but people may not be realizing that the NFL may end up preferring both Kellen Mond and Davis Mills to him.

The main reason here is the upside that they provide. While Trask proved himself as a top college football quarterback, his transition to the NFL is murky due to average arm strength and subpar athleticism. While Mond and Mills may not have played to his level in college, I believe the NFL is excited by the upside they possess, stemming from their superior physical traits. Mond possesses good arm strength and good athleticism as well, displaying an ability to escape a muddied pocket and pick up yardage with his legs. In my opinion, he does not do so often enough, and should learn to take advantage of his athleticism more frequently, although he’s certainly shown enough flashes to intrigue NFL teams. Mills is a former 5-star recruit, which is already a testament to his natural talent. He has great size and arm strength, as well as solid athleticism. His accuracy and ball placement are not at Trask’s level, and his body of work is much smaller (with just 11 starts to his name). That being said, his pure starting potential in the NFL may be greater than Trask’s just because of his physical traits.

Trask will likely be a great backup and serviceable spot starter in the NFL, and his tape makes you confident in that evaluation. Mond and Mills are more raw than him and involve more projection, but I believe that they have better physical tools and greater upside as potential starters. This will lead the NFL to take a leap of faith with them somewhere on Day 2, and definitely before Trask hears his name being called. Of course, it just takes one team to fall in love with Trask and pass on Mond or Mills in his favor. After analyzing their profiles from the viewpoint of the NFL’s upside-driven style of drafting, I think that there is a high chance that Trask is going to be the last of the three still remaining on the board come draft week.
