Jaylon Jones is an athletic cornerback that has the ability to play multiple positions in the secondary with great speed and fluid hips. Jones’ coverage grades average in the high 70th percentiles at outside corner and he is consistent with elite competition at the wide receiver position going against schools like Alabama and LSU.
Ability/Skillset
Jones has footwork and lateral movement to break on the ball to force an incompletion or pass breakup, with the patience to not open his hips too soon to get beat on a double move. He uses his hands without being too aggressive on press coverage by using proper technique in backpedal after contact and keeping the receiver in front of him. Jones shows his will to tackle ball carriers by wrapping up and using proper depth to maintain leverage upon contact. He uses his 6’2″ frame to out-jump, deflect, or overpower small receivers in the end zone or tight spaces on the field that would require a bigger target. However, he has the ability to play big by challenging bigger receivers and shutting down their big play ability with jump balls and possession catches.
Weaknesses
- Tracking the ball and making a play/Int
- Develop more play recognition in zone coverage
Overview
Jones has the ability and skill set to be a day 1 starter in the NFL, especially if there is a big receiver for him to be matched up with. Jones’ physical play style will be very effective in a man-to-man press scheme, and he has the ability to be a great CB in a zone scheme as well. His fluid hips, patience, and footwork translate perfectly in the NFL to match him against the best receivers.
