STRENGTHS: Sam Howell is a 2021 NFL projected first-round pick, as his arm strength, accuracy, and mobility give him all the traits that NFL teams covet in today’s passing league. His arm strength is above average, as he is able to make all types of NFL throws and fit deep passes into tight windows; his ability to throw deep passes on the run is rare. Howell’s running ability is tough, with speed to gain yardage for first downs; he uses his 220-pound frame to take on defenders and gain yardage. His pre-snap reads are shown by recognizing defensive coverages and attacking open lanes for his receivers to run after  the catch. Howell’s velocity and touch on his passes are strong on short, intermediate, and deep passes, which gives his receivers easier targets with catchable passes where only they can make plays on.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Sam Howell’s pocket awareness needs work on his footwork to climb the pocket and sense pressure. He can be more efficient in the red zone by making the correct read in RPOs (run-pass options). However, his areas of improvement can easily be coached up with film and repetition in training camp.
