Today we are focusing on Cortez Davis a Cornerback for Hawaii. Bond is a 5’11” 180lbs, Senior, who was an Honorable Mention All-Mountain West last season. The film I watched to scout Bond was @ Wyoming (2020) and vs. New Mexico (2020).

Pros:

Cortez Davis stands out as a physical cornerback who plays press man coverage really well. He has quick hands that allow him to jam the receiver or play bump and run well. He has quick feet and smooth hips that allow him to transition into coverage with ease. He is solid in zone coverage and as a blitzer/contain man off the edge. He is aggressive when it comes to taking on bigger blockers and attempting to shed the blocks. He plays gunner on special teams which is a huge plus.

Cons:

Davis tends to stare at the QB for to long which doesn’t really hurt him that much now, but at the next level it will cause him to get beat a lot. He is aggressive at times but isn’t consistent when making plays on the ball carrier. His tackling needs work as he either dives at the legs with his shoulder or tackles to high. He needs to learn to to wrap up around the waist. He doesn’t gang tackle, and is often not looking to hit the ball carrier unless he is the only one there. He doesn’t travel with opposing top Receivers, but rather he sticks on the strong side of the field, which isn’t my favorite thing to see from a press man corner. He doesn’t have the best hands either when it comes to intercepting the ball.

Bottom Line:

Bottom Line is Cortez Davis is a solid press man corner but he lacks the aggressiveness to lock down one side of the field by himself. His lack of tackling ability can expose him a lot as well as his unwillingness to gang tackle makes me question how bad he likes to hit. He is good in zone coverage as well but he would be better as a high 3rd in a cover three rather than a flat in a cover 2 as he wont be able to take on NFL running games by himself. He may work better in a zone coverage scheme as he tends to only play one side of the field, but he will need to improve his zone technique and not staring at the QB to work in that type of system. Overall I think he needs to learn to be more aggressive and learn to play the run better because without that, his coverage abilities alone don’t make him an exciting prospect. I gave Davis a final prospect grade of a 4.8, which translates to a 6th round pick.
