With the 75th overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks selected Russell Wilson from the University of Wisconsin. He was the sixth QB taken that year behind the likes of Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, and Brock Osweiler. Wilson is the perfect addition to a team that’s just a QB away from its former proud status in the NFL.
The Broncos are a winning brand, and Wilson brings a prolific resume, including 104 career victories and a Super Bowl title. The nine-time Pro Bowler was successful the day he was drafted by the Seahawks. Just take a look at his rookie year stat line (30 total TDs, 10 INTs, and over 3,100 yards with an 11-5 regular season record). He kicked down the door of the notion that a rookie QB needs to hold a clipboard to start his career in the league. In fact, Wilson reversed that role with Matt Flynn, who was the big-name, high-priced free agent penciled to start that year for the Seahawks.
The Broncos should be excited to land Wilson, who has helped his team to double-digit wins in eight of the 10 seasons he’s played (injuries of course didn’t help him in that favor last season). He’s also never had a losing season until last year (6-8). This was the first example of a season where he suffered a “somewhat” major injury and missed extended time. Wilson’s remarkable durability is overlooked.
The 10-year veteran is on pace to land in the Hall of Fame, and if he can bring this team to the promised land as well, you might as well induct him right away. He’s thrown for nearly 300 TDs (292 to be exact), and he owns a 101.8 career passer rating. If Wilson’s numbers stay true to form with the Broncos, they will be in contention in a loaded AFC West, which could be the best division in football now.
He’s beaten the odds, and so far he has always kept his end of the bargain since the day he was drafted. Sure, he may be small in stature at 5′ 11,” but pound for pound, Wilson is a top-5 QB in the league. Make no mistake about it, Denver needs Wilson, and NFL fans will get used to him donning the “Orange Crush” uniform real quick. The thought of Wilson vs. Mahomes, Carr, and Herbert is must-see TV. I think we are in for a real treat.
